CHILDREN'S BOOK WEEK

May 11-17th is Children's Book Week. I thought it would be interesting to highlight children's books we love, but are now out of print. So if you have a favorite, no longer available to purchase, please do share by leaving a comment. Thank goodness for libraries where many books have a place to live on.

One of my favorite picture books is That's What Friends Do by Kathryn Cave and illustrated by Nick Maland. I love this simple story about the dedication of friendship and the rhythm of the lines.

Here's an excerpt:

If you got lost in the woods, in the woods, I will find you.

I asked Kathi Appelt if she had a favorite out-of-print book. Here's what she said:

"One of my favorite books of all time is Lucky Russell, by Brad Sneed. Not only is it about a cat, but it reaffirms so many things--the notion that none of us is too small to play a big role; the importance of doing our jobs well; the power of love. The book works in a million ways. As well, Sneed channels Thomas Hart Benton without overplaying his hand.

It's a book to be savored. I'm glad I have my own copy, but I wish it was still in print."

I'll be posting others on the blog throughout the week. Meanwhile please share one with us.
